WIM WENDERS – MY POLAROID FRIENDS

Exhibition realised by Les Rencontres d’Arles on the occasion of its 54th edition (200) in collaboration with the Wim Wenders Foundation and Wenders Images.
La Maison du diable – Cultural Space of the Fellini Foundation in Sion hosts the Wim Wenders exhibition, Mes Amis Polaroid, realised by Les Rencontres d’Arles on the occasion of its 54th edition (2023) in collaboration with the Wim Wenders Foundation and Wenders Images. Wim Wenders is one of the greatest figures in contemporary cinema. Director of often award-winning films, such as Paris, Texas (1984) or Les Ailes du Desir (1987), he also has several Oscar-nominated documentaries, including Buena Vista Social Club, Pina and Le Salt de la Terre. Parallel to his work as director, producer and author, Wim Wenders has devoted himself to photography since 1984. His works have been exhibited in museums and galleries around the world and include several 3D art installations. The Wim Wenders Foundation collects his work and supports the innovative stories of young filmmakers by awarding a grant.

Late 1976, Wim Wenders reminds me, I shot The American Friend in Hamburg and Paris, with Bruno Ganz and Dennis Hopper. The screenplay was adapted from the novel Ripley’s Having Fun [Ripley’s Game] by Patricia Highsmith. Polaroids were then the equivalent of the snapshots that smartphones allow today – their analogue ancestors, in short. True intimate diaries, the cameras produced ‘original’ impressions.
