DEC 17th: NATIONAL DAY OF BHUTAN
Bhutan is a little country of 46500sqkm situated between China and India. It counts about 691000 inhabitants. Bhutan is now a constitutional monarchy since 2008 and parliamentary elections are held.
Bhutan has peaks of more than 7000m but also subtropical regions. the climate is quite various.
During the reign of King King Jigme Singye Wangchuck , important steps towards modernisation of the country were made. The powers of the King were reduced, television and internet were introduced in this hymalayan country.Heir Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck became King in 2008 and is now 33.
Bhutan has now two political assemblies, a lower and a upper House of representatives and alreaydy two elections were run by the two main political parties since the announcement of the reforms by the former King.
Vajrayana Buddhism is a full part of the religious heritage of the country but there is constitutional freedom of religion.
The currency of the country is the gnultrum, fixed to the indian rupee.
Bhtuan’s economy is mainly based on agriculture, forests, hydroelectric power and tourism.
