Statement by the European Parliament President on the outcome of the US Presidential election
“We have been following the US presidential election very closely. This is an election of a great partner of the European Union, of an ally with whom we have come a long way in modern times, and with whom we want to continue working.
“To the new President, Joe Biden, our best wishes.
“The world needs a strong relationship between Europe and the United States, a relaunch of transatlantic relations capable of addressing the many challenges these times present us with. The COVID-19 pandemic is the first time that Europe and the United States face a global challenge without a common vision. This makes our responses less effective.
“However, it is not only the pandemic that calls for a stronger and more concerted relationship. We have common values, a strong belief in democracy and freedom. Together we can fight against climate change, tackle the green transition and digital transformation, commit to ensuring our security, fight terrorism, and defend human rights. A world with less inequality is in all our interests.
“I look forward to working closely with the United States Congress and the new Biden administration.”
