THE PLANETSOLAR SOON IN BOULOGNE-SUR-MER

untitledThe new solar-powered campaign of the MS Tûranor PlanetSolar will begin in Boulogne-sur-Mer, where the catamaran will be guest of honour at the NAUSICAA‘s 23rd Festival of Sea Imagery. The first stopover will take place from Monday 14 to  Monday 28 April 2014.

On the heels of success of the 2013 campaign during which the MS Tûranor PlanetSolar demonstrated that she could be operated for practical purposes by carrying out, in collaboration with the University of Geneva, a scientific expedition along the Gulf Stream, the vessel is being prepared for new adventures in pursuit of the sun!

The world’s largest solar-powered craft showcases a new way of sailing, understanding the seas and oceans and involving every stakeholder, whether from the scientific, economic, political or social sector. The vision, led by NAUSICAA, is that of a Blue Society.

NAUSICAA is the only discovery centre of its kind. It focuses on the marine environment but in a manner designed to be fun, educational and scientific, dealing mainly with the relationship between Man and the Sea. Gigantic aquariums, underwater exploration and the latest technology create a sense of magic in a grandiose setting. Your dreams are within reach here.

In 2012, the MS Tûranor PlanetSolar completed the first ever solar-powered circumnavigation of the globe. With more than 500 sq. metres of photovoltaic panels on board, the catamaran sailed round the world without using a drop of fuel, proving the efficiency and maturity of photovoltaic technology.

Following this success, the vessel began its “second life” in 2013, illustrating its practical uses and again proving the potential of solar energy, most notably by working with the University of Geneva to complete a scientific expedition along the Gulf Stream known as “PlanetSolar Deepwater”.

After wintering in Lorient (France) for six months, the MS Tûranor PlanetSolar will shortly be setting off on further expeditions. Following on from its trips in 2013, the schedule for 2014 is designed to display yet more of the vessel’s practical uses.

The new solar-powered campaign will begin in Boulogne-sur-Mer where the catamaran will be guest of honour at the 23rd Festival of Sea Imagery.
