NANTES: WINES AROUND NANTES IN THE “PAYS NANTAIS” (5)
from our publisher Miguel D. DESNERCK, special correspondent in Nantes:
A serie of articles about the European Green Capital 2013, NANTES.
Nantes in the Loire Atlantique department and the surroundings of Nantes are of huge importance for the french viticulture. Recently, we came across two wine estates we would like to describe.
1. Domaine Bretaudeau
The wine estate of Jerome Bretaudeau lies in Getigne, some km away from Nantes. It’s an 8ha wine estate that Jerome is already exploiting for some years after having worked for other wineries.
The cuvees of Jerome are really astonishing because he uses vey unusual grapesorts for this part of France: pinot gris or chardonnay. The red which was offered at the gala dinner of European green cities is the cabernet franc coming from a great terroir. It is “champ des cailloux”, an unusual ripe, cherry delicious and mineral cabertnet franc. A top wine for this Loire region.
2. Domaine Poiron-Dabin
Wine estate Poirot-Dabin of Chateau-Thebaud is maybe less iconoclastic as the first winery we just described but the quality of the wines is really astonishing. This wines estate gets the best of the traditional grape sort of the nantes region: the “melon de Bourgogne”, “the gros plant”, but also uses pinot gris, chardonnay. The reds are pinot noir (quite unusual in this region) and malbec (the grape sort of Cahors)
A fantastic wine estate which juggles with the grape sorts ! To discover asap
