GLASS SCULPTURES INSPIRED BY NATURE AND SEA LIFE

Biography

Pia Raeymaekers is a belgian dutch-speaking  artist who studied glass art and techniques at Sint-Lucas Institute in Ghent, at the University of Sunderland,UK and in the Czech Republic. Afterwards, she moved to Northern Ireland, where she has been artist-in-residence at the Flowerfield Arts Centre in Portstewart from 2009 till 2012. In 2012, she moved to Antwerp.

Concept

Her imagination is fired by the inspiring landscape and open spaces of the Antrim coast, and more specifically by nature and marine life.

Pia’s glass sculptures are based on anemones and sea urchins and the vulnerability they have to contend with: sometimes protected by their shells, but also under constant threat from their environment. She likes to play with the limitations of the material. The organic forms are determined by the way in which she works the glass. Instead of trying to imitate nature, she incorporates her own interpretation of various coastal elements into her work. The staggering beauty of the Irish marine life and magical rock formations captivated her and created such a stimulating environment for her art work she decided to live there.
