THE EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT CELEBRATED THE HOLOCAUST REMBRANCE DAY
Martin Schulz, president of European Parliament, celebrated last 27th January the international holocaust remembrance ceremony at the European Parliament in Brussels.
“Evil exists every day and therefore we have to be visible and prudent every day and every moment.” EP president Martin Schulz stressed the day’s importance in a speech. He also said that the EU exists as a result and as an answer to what happened in Europe in the first half of the 20th century.
The European and International Holocaust Remembrance Day is held every year on 27 January, the anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz by the Red Army. This week Mr Schulz inaugurated the Raoul Wallenberg room at the European Parliament in honour of the swedish diplomat who saved thousands of Jews from gas chambers such as the ones in Auschwitz. During the ceremony he announced that Holocaust Remembrance Day will be introduced as an annual event in parliament’s calendar.
