EP Tajani to #Barcelona: my heart goes to victims
A van drove into pedestrians in a terrorist attack in the center of Barcelona, a top touristic destination Las Ramblas. killing and injuring people. While toll is rising, in immediate aftermath of the the attack 13 people were declared dead, and more than 50 injured, said Joaquim Forn, Catalan’s interior ministry.
“I want to condemn, in the most resounding terms, the terrorist attack perpetrated in Barcelona earlier today. My thoughts are with the victims of this terrible atrocity and their families, as well as the citizens of Barcelona. Tonight, Barcelona is close to the heart of all Europeans”, – said European Parliament president Antonio Tajani in his statement,
“I would also like to express my solidarity with the whole country, His Majesty the King and the Prime Minister. My full support goes to the work being carried out by the Spanish authorities with the hope that they will stop the barbarity perpetrated by the terrorists in the shortest time possible.”
“The determination of the European Union in the fight against terrorism will not diminish. We will not be intimidated by those who peddle violence and death and we will face them down strengthened by our freedom, our unity and rule of law” – Tajani concluded.
An official in Barcelona said that it’s possible as many as 80 are injured. About 15 of those people are in serious condition.
Local authorities said they arrested one man in connection with the attack.
The van jumped the sidewalk around 5:30 p.m. local time in the vicinity of the city’s historic Las Ramblas pedestrian mall, a top tourist destination. Law enforcement said there is an ongoing search for the person(s) who carried out the attack.
