Recently , Didier Reynders, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs met with Mongi Hamdi, Special Representative of the Secretary General of the United Nations for Mali.
Didier Reynders expressed his appreciation for the work of MINUSMA in very difficult security conditions and he also honoured the memory of the UN peacekeepers who lost their lives during a mission.
The Minister and the Special Representative discussed the situation on the ground in Mali after the Algiers agreement. Didier Reynders underlined that Belgium is prepared to contribute to the implementation of the agreement, in coordination with the United Nations, the European Union and the African Union, and in support of the Malian parties.
Didier Reynders and Mongi Hamdi insisted on the importance of concrete projects, even on a small scale, that show to the population the immediate benefits of restoring public order. On this, MINUSMA and the European Union could work together.
