The second edition of the European Conference on SUMP closed with a record number of more than 300 participants, up from 144 in 2014. This year’s the conference theme was Sustainable Urban Mobility Planning for all citizens, including subjects such as the scaling of SUMP to different cities’ needs and budgets, was well as accessibility and mobility to include all social groups in a city. The conference was hosted at the Politechnica University of Bucharest and took place during two days from 16 to 17 June.

Participants and organizers agreed that the success of this second edition has established the conference series as the main event dedicated to SUMPs for planners and policy makers in Europe. The conferences allow stakeholders from all over the EU to converge and discuss based on the common ground that the concept provides, supporting the European Commission’s sustained efforts in recent years to establish SUMP as a common planning framework.

During the closing of this year’s conference, the host for the third edition was made public by Daniela Rosca, Head of Unit at DG MOVE. Bremen, Germany, winner of the 2015 SUMP award of the Europoean Commission and one of the front-running cities in Europe in the field, will welcome the event in the first half of 2016.

Keynotes during the conference focused on the European Commissions initiatives to promote the SUMP concept through the European Platform for Sustainable Urban Mobility Plans, SUMP in host country Romania, extending the SUMP concept to all European cities, as well as city showcases from Bucharest, Malmö, and Vienna. Parallel sessions were available under the themes “all cities” and “all people”, true to the conference theme, in addition to technical workshops on data collection and scenario development.
