The FIFF

Namur, capital city of the walloon region in Belgium will be during 8 days the capital city of the french-speaking movies. Indeed, from Oct. 03d. untill Oct. 10th., this will be the 29th. edidtion of the “FIFF” (“Festival International du Film Francophone”).

Of course, we will find new films from France, Canada (Québec), Luxemburg, Zwitzerland and Belgium, but also from Romania, Africa (Algeria, Congo (DRC), Mauritania, Morocco, Senegal, Tunisia), Asia (Lebanon, Vietnam), all countries being recognized like having some ties with the french language or being former french colonies. And like each year, some ambassadors will be present in Namur, to discover a film of their own country.

Some movies of the Province of Québec (Canada), for some commercial reasons, are english-speaking, with french subtitles, like for other movies shown in their national languages, also with french subtitles.

The same for 4 Flemish movies being shown in Namur (” Image”/in a World Premiere Vision,/Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah, “Halfweg”/Geoffrey Enthoven,, “Labyrinthus”/Douglas Boswell, “Plan Bart”/Roel Mondelaers). Indeed, since 2006, each year, some flemish movies, selected by the “Oostende Film Festival” are in the “FIFF”‘s programm. This year, also, we will have 7 Flemish short films (from 14 untill 26 minutes). Definitively, it’s a great exemple of the good cultural relations between the north and the south of our country.

But, coming bak with the 15 films in competition,, here in Namur, the winnars don’t receive any “Oscar” or “César”, but well some “Bayards” (from the name of a horse, in a local legend) and other prices. Saffy Nebbou/Fr. is the President of the official Jury (7 people from 7 countries and 3 continents).

Another competition is opened for the short films (Jury’s President : Emma De Caunes/Fr.), without to forget prices gived by three other jurys : “Emile Cantillon” offering one “Gold Bayard” for the realisator of his first fiction movie (7 young people, form 18 untill 25 years old, coming from 6 countries and 3 continents, have to chooise between 20 films), “Junior” (jury composed by 7 kids being in their 1st. Highschool’ year) and “Cinevox” (4 belgian cinema lovers in the jury leaded by Eric Rue Fsson, journalist from “Arte Belgium”).

For the “Opening Gala”, on Oct. O3d., we will have : “Tokyo Fiancée” (Stefan Liberski/Bel./see one picture here down) and for the “Closing Gala”, on Oct. 10th. : “Terre battue” (Stéphane Demoustier/Fr.). Also, on Oct. 09th., for the “Gala of the Belgian Cooperation for Development” : “Timbuktu” (Abderrahmane Sissako/Mauritania) and on Oct. O6th., for the “Gala of the French Speaking Communities” : “Hope” (Boris Lojkine/Fr.).

For the blind people, two movies will be show in audio-description (“Tomboy”/Céline Sciamma/Fr. and “Pas son Genre”/Lucas Belvaux/Bel.).

Now, the “FIFF” is also the place where many professionals meet to sell their movies and to speak about the evolution of the 7th. art during some conferences. They will have meetings regarding the “Belgian Tax Shelter”, the “Belgian Cinema”, the 5th. edition (Brussels/Feb. 07th.) of the “Magritte” (being like the “Oscars” of the “Cesars”, in Belgium), …

Also, with his section “FIFF Campus” about 8000 students come to see some movies and participate to different activities. For them, like for everyone, the “FIFF” is a great opportunity to see long or short movies wich will never be show in the main Belgian or French movie theatres. Not only with fictions but also with 15 documentaries (+ 8 short films), this is a real chance to learn more about different african, asian or eastern european cultures (two films from Romania received th two last “Gold Bayards” : in 2012, “Everybody in our Family” (Radu Jude) and in 2013 : “Child’s Pose” (Celin Peter Netzer).

And don’t forget, if you like to become one actor, there will be to castings, on 0ct. 04th. and 08th., at 04 p.m. (for children, the parents have to give their parental consent).

To see as much movies you like during eight days, the prices are the same as last year. So, the pass costs 25€00 (20€00 only for seniors citizens, students, unemployed people and “Delhaize” customers; free for teenagers from 15 untill 18 years old, between 3:30 p.m. and 6:45 p.m.). The one day pass cost 8€00.
