ALDE Party President Sir Graham Watson is in Cyprus today for meetings with political parties and officials. In Northern Cyprus he will meet Serdar Denktas, Leader of the Democrat Party – National Forces and Huseyin Ozgurgun, Leader of the National Unity Party. Both parties have expressed interest in closer links with the ALDE party. Sir Graham will be accompanied by United Democrats Leader and former government minister Praxoula Antoniadou-Kyriacou from the Greek Cypriot community. She will later host a meeting in the South between Sir Graham Watson and members of her party, which is a member of the ALDE party.
Sir Graham Watson will also pay a courtesy visit to Sibel Siber MP, the President of the Turkish Cypriot parliament, and to his long-standing acquaintance Ozdil Nami, foreign minister in Northern Cyprus. He hopes to be briefed on progress in the UN-backed talks in search of agreement on a bi-cameral, bi-zonal federation on the island.
Commenting ahead of the visit Sir Graham Watson said: “I welcome the expressions of interest from two of the Turkish Cypriot parties in structured co-operation with European Liberal Democrats. Talks between the two communities on a reunification of the island are progressing and it is important for political parties from the EU to establish closer links with their counterparts in Northern Cyprus. I have had the privilege to visit Northern Cyprus on previous occasions and I look forward to renewing my acquaintances with those who seek reunification.”
