Heads of State appoint JC JUNCKER as new EU commission chairman

Following the decision taken today by EU Heads of State and Government at the European Summit this friday to propose Jean-Claude Juncker as President of the European Commission, Manfred Weber MEP, Chairman of the EPP Group in the European Parliament, issued the following statement:

“The voice of the European citizens has been heard. In putting forward the candidate who has been the face of the European People’s Party throughout the European elections campaign, the EU Heads of State and Government have taken an important step towards more democracy and transparency in Europe.”

“Jean-Claude Juncker’s nomination is a success for the EPP. European voters have put their trust in us. They have made us yet again the largest political group in the European Parliament. What they now expect from us is to deliver. This is our responsibility. We need a strong European Commission that will put forward a reform agenda to promote growth and jobs in Europe.  We have to focus on the big issues. Jean-Claude Juncker is the right person for this task. He can count on the EPP Group’s full support. We will join forces and work closely both with the European Commission, under Jean-Claude Juncker’s leadership, and the Council, to put Europe’s economy back on track.”

“We now look forward to the vote in the European Parliament. We are confident that a large majority will approve the nomination of Jean-Claude Juncker so that the EU Institutions can start working towards their priorities for European citizens. We have no time to lose”, Manfred Weber said.

Manfred Weber also welcomed the signature of the Association Agreements with Ukraine, Georgia and Moldova. “The EPP Group will do its utmost to ensure the European Parliament ratifies these agreements swiftly”, he said.
