The eusew awards
Yesterday, 24 June 2014, the European Commission announced the six winners of the 2014 Sustainable Energy Europe (SEE) and ManagEnergy Awards. Selected from a total of 342 submissions, winners were announced during a ceremony hosted by EU Energy Commissioner Günther H. Oettinger, at the Charlemagne building, European Commission premises in Brussels.
In the Communicating category, dedicated to awareness-raising actions, the project SuperHomes coordinated by UK’s National Energy Foundation won the prize for their campaign activities and achievements in promoting energy-efficient refurbishment of old homes across the country.
The France-based multinational corporation Schneider Electric has been rewarded with its Energy University project in the Learning category (capacity building and knowledge transfer initiatives). The programme’s 350+ free online courses help professionals make smarter choices about the top issues impacting today’s energy industry.
The Consuming category rewards projects in energy efficiency and deployment of renewable energy. The Austrian company MethaPower has won this category with the country’s biggest biogas plant, a complete closed-circle, zero emission production of energy for use as electricity, heat and biomethane replacing natural gas.
The Living category recognises best-in-class buildings. The Brogården project from AB Alingsåshem, a municipal housing authority is the first multi-family dwelling in Sweden to be retrofitted using passive house techniques.
In the Travelling category, focused on the transport sector, the project UPM BioVerno by the Finnish company UPM Biofuels has been recognised for producing high quality renewable diesel made from pulp and paper industry residues. This renewable fuel can be used in all diesel engines without the need for modification and reduces greenhouse gas emissions by up to 80% compared to fossil-based diesel.
The ManagEnergy Award, specially designed for energy agencies and local and regional authorities, has been given to the Polish Commune of Kisielice for achieving energy autonomy by investing revenues from wind farms on its agricultural land into sustainable energy generation and heating systems for the community. The Andalusian Energy Agency from Spain and Severn Wye Energy Agency from the UK were recognised as runners-up for their respective projects.

What is the EU sustainabilit week ?
The EU Sustainable Energy Week (EUSEW), first launched by the European Commission in 2006, is an internationally recognised, high profile event that brings together key stakeholders from across the EU and beyond. At EUSEW, participants exchange ideas, share experiences, and build alliances, to help keep the EU’s energy and climate goals at the top of national and European agendas.
The EUSEW consists of a High Level Policy Conference (HLPC) in Brussels and localEnergy Days across Europe and worldwide. Organised by stakeholders, public bodies, and citizens, the Energy Days are associated activities taking many forms (conferences, exhibitions, workshops, etc.). They all have one thing in common however; the promotion of energy efficiency and renewable energy in an accessible and interactive way.
Sustainable Energy Europe Awards (SEE): First launched in 2006, the SEE Awards recognise and promote outstanding projects in energy efficiency, renewable energy and clean transport. The SEE Awards gather projects that contribute to the Europe 2020 strategy for smart, sustainable and inclusive growth and have a proven impact. The competition is open to stakeholders from the public and private sector including SMEs, multi-national industry associations, academic institutions and NGOs. The SEE Awards integrate five different categories according to different policy strands: awareness-raising (COMMUNICATING), educational programmes (LEARNING), buildings (LIVING), energy savings (CONSUMING) and clean mobility (TRAVELLING). Read the full category descriptions here.
ManagEnergy Award: Regional and local public authorities have an essential role to play in achieving Europe’s 2020 climate and energy objectives. Also in its 8th edition, theManagEnergy Award is expressly designed to reward their achievements. This year’s ManagEnergy Award focuses on local and regional public authorities and energy agencies that are addressing fuel poverty, implementing renewable energy projects or innovative financing schemes for sustainable energy actions.
