A NEW KING FOR A NEW SPAIN
Yesterday at the Zarzuela Palace near Madrid, King Felipe received the royal sash from his father. Juan Carlos formally abdicated on Wednesday at midnight and let his son at the head of Spain. After democracy was restored in the 1970s it’s the first royal transition. after 39 years of Juan Carlos’ reign, he decided to let the crown to his inheritor.
The new King Felipe VI will have multiple fights and cases to lead on as he starts today his first day as a monarch. Restore monarchy (spanish are asking for a referendum), handle the economic crisis which still affects his country, face the Basque’s situation as they continue to claim their self-rule and finally just show to his population he can be the new token of Spain.
Today the new king starts working with his prime minister Mariano Rajoy. His first official act will be on saturday as he will meet some associations of terrorism’s victims and his first official travel will be Vatican, followed by Morocco, France and Portugal.
The foreign affairs minister José Manuel Garcia-Margallo also announced that Felipe VI will attend the General Assembly of the United Nations. He will present the foreign policy of Spain and defend the appointment of Spain to the UN Security Council in 2015 and 2016.
