BRUSSELS-CAPITAL REGION CELEBRATES ITS 25 YEARS
The Brussels-Capital Region this year celebrates 25 years of existence. The program of this edition will include free concerts, street entertainment and the public opening of the Brussels Parliament.

‘Festivity of Iris’ derives its name from the symbol of the called ‘Iris’ flower, emblem of the Brussels Region. This choice was made based on the millenary presence of the plant in the region. In March 5, 1991 the Regional Council of Brussels decided to choose the iris as a symbol of the region, and the sign of the iris has since spread throughout the Brussels institutions.
It was in 1970 that the revision of the constitution created the texts 3 regions: the Walloon Region, the Flemish Region and the Brussels Region. The principle of the 3 regions was accepted but the development of regions in practice was postponed. The special act of 12 January 1989 finally created Brussels-Capital on the territory of 19 municipalities.
Since June 18, 1989, the first regional elections, the Brussels-Capital Region is comparable to the Flemish and Walloon autonomous regions.
The weekend of May 10th and 11th, the Region will celebrate its 25 years of existence! This is an opportunity to highlight its creativity, friendliness and incredible cultural effervescence! For two days, the center of Brussels neighborhood of Mont des Arts Brussels to Parliament will host shows, events, workshops and free concerts.
