COMMITTEE OF THE REGIONS IS READY TO CELEBRATE ITS 20TH ANNIVERSARY
It’s been 20 years since Committee of the Regions has worked to bring citizens closer to the European Union.
The Committee of the Regions is the EU’s Assembly of Regional and Local Representatives. Its 353 members – regional presidents, mayors or elected representatives of regions and cities – who live and work in the regions where they come from, speak for their voters at the very heart of the EU decision-making and legislative process and keep them abreast of EU developments, in tune with the needs of their constituents.
In 2009, the Lisbon Treaty strengthened recognition of the Committee of the Regions’ role. Since the Lisbon Treaty’s entry into force, the Committee of the Regions has to be consulted throughout the legislative process involving the European Parliament and the Council of the European Union in the following areas, such as economic and social policies, health, education and culture, employment, the environment, transport, energy, and all aspects that affect the relationship between citizens and European institutions, in accordance with principles of subsidiarity, proximity and partnership.
A decade ago, the European Union witnessed a historic turning point in recent European history, when Central, Eastern and South-eastern European countries joined the Union, marking and consolidating the integration process on the European Union.
In a short time, EU institutions will open their doors to the public on Saturday 17 May.
This is an opportunity to learn about the milestones of institutional history and get prepared for the upcoming European elections at the informative stands of the Political Groups of the Committee of Regions. The ‘EU Citizens Passport’, a publication showing Europe’s diversity and the unifying potential of EU citizens’ rights, will be also distributed. Over 30 regions and cities will showcase the diversity and attractiveness of European landscape, resources and traditions at their interactive stands. A taste of regional products may be offered. Join this party spirit with cakes, balloons, photo opportunities and fun for the whole family!
