One week after the visit of U.S. President Barack Obama, it was the turn of Elizabeth II to go to the Vatican to meet for the first time Pope Francis.  Elizabeth II visits Vatican for the third time.

The Queen of England ( 88 years old ) and her husband Prince Consort Philip were received Thursday at the Vatican. They spent a few hours in Rome .

They were also invited by Italian President Giorgio Napolitano. After a private lunch at the Quirinale, the  Presidential Palace, Elizabeth II was received in audience by the Pope in the afternoon .
It was a meeting that lasted 17 minutes. The queen, who is also head of the Anglican Church had welcomed John Paul II in London in 1982 , and Pope Benedict XVI in 2010 in Edinburgh , Scotland.
