TOO MANY ACCIDENTS INVOLVING LORRIES AND CYCLES
A large coalition involving Transport for London, the IRU, The Mayor of London Transport & Environment want safer trucks to save lifes of cyclists and pedestrians.
A common declaration was drafted and it was presented by Phil Bennion MEP, member of the transport committee in the European Parliament during a press conference at Residence Palace in Brussels. Also took part:Andrew Gilligan, cycling commissionner of the Mayor of London, Chris Boardman MBE and Transport & Environment campaigner for cleaner lorries William Tods. According to Phil Bennion, solutions can be found on an european level because trucks dont stop at internal european borders.
Phil Bennion MEP proposes the following adaptations in the production of lorries: improved braking systems; energy absorbing crash monitoring systems in front of the lorries; adapted shapes to make collisions smoother; larger windows, larger windscreens.
By change of the legislation, lorries have to be made safer but also cleaner.
With the support of the lorries manufacturing industry, the amount of killed and heavy injured pedestrians and clyclists can be reduced. According to Phil Bennion MEP, the objective is to save LIFES.
