The belgian minister of foreign affairs Didier Reynders has learned with sadness the death of Nelson Mandela, former President of South Africa.
President Mandela , called ” Madiba ” by his family, is a symbol of peace, reconciliation and of visionary leadership. He was the first democratically elected South Africa and as President, accompanied by his country towards the end of apartheid. He also restored human dignity.
Nelson Mandela has managed to transform a deeply divided country into a rainbow nation. For this, he paid a high price both physically and personally , through his “Long way to freedom.”
” During my visit to South Africa, I saw how Nelson Mandela is an inspiration for the South African population , but also in Africa and around the world. This alone represents a model vision and leadership to which many aspire . Hopefully his example will guide younger generationsfor a long time in the pursuit of his work of reconciliation and tolerance”, said the belgian foreign minister .
On behalf of the Government of Belgium, Didier Reynders would like to present its sincere condolences to the family of Nelson Mandela, the authorities of South Africa and the South African people.
