POTOCNIK OPENED THE PHOTO EXHIBITION “NICE TO SEA”
During the European Week of Waste Reduction, a nice awareness to keep the ocean clean…
The Commissioner in charge of environment opened the photo exhibition: “Nice to Sea?”, organised by the Surfrider Foundation Europe. The European Week for Waste Reduction, which runs from 16 to 24 November, is proposing new ways to spread the word about reducing waste, reusing products and recycling materials, the “3Rs”. The aim is to develop and to test communication tools that target administrations and associations, businesses, schools, and individual citizens. Activities will peak during the Waste Prevention Thematic Days, which this year focus on Reuse, with local activities such as second-hand markets, repair workshops and swap parties. On 4th November, the European Commission adopted a proposal that requires member states to reduce their use of lightweight plastic carrier bags. Member states can choose the measures they find most appropriate, including charges, national reduction targets or a ban under certain conditions. Lightweight plastic bags are often used only once, but can persist in the environment for hundreds of years, often as harmful microscopic particles that are known to be dangerous to marine life in particular.
The Surfrider Foundation is trying to for 24 years to make us become aware of this problem by advertising campaigns, tours by members of the foundation in schools by the testimonies of ambassadors of the sports world using the oceans, and all the volunteers who support the Foundation’s action…
This is an opportunity to support the Surfrider Ocean Initiative, and participate in the elaboration of a better world. The exhibition runs from 15 November until 4 December 2013, 1st floor hall of the Berlaymont building (Metro Schuman).
Marine litter has now become an issue of truly global concern. Lets free our oceans from this plague.
Let’s clean up Europe…
